My household is on day twenty of a jaunty little journey that commenced when we moved the twins to big boy beds and has included air travel and a mysterious 4-day fever turned ear infection. This means my husband and I are waking up between one and three times every night to tend to someone. The upside is that it gives us so many more opportunities to fall into bed exhausted and grateful for sleep. The downside is that none of the sleep is any good and it makes it hard to remember things clearly when I sit down to talk to you here.
I know the week started well because it was a shock. The last couple weeks the writing has felt scant and suddenly I was churning out words. I even wrote myself a motivational note — a draft version of whatever email I will send to all of you and anyone who I’ve ever emailed in my life when my book is published (reminder: book is not close to done). It was a fun space to live in for a few minutes. Very Stuart Smalley, for those of you who are also still a little misty about SNL50 like me.
Then I went back to that dumb list of things this one character might say and kept running. This got me another inch closer to this character feeling like a real person, thereby making him easier to write.
So imagine my surprise when I went to tally up my words and again found that there weren’t that many. You might be familiar with this by now, so I will just take a deep breath and tell myself I’m good enough, I’m smart enough and doggone it, someday I will finish this book. And maybe sleep. But probably in reverse order.
